There's a switch on the back to "kill" it, but it doesn't kill it. Mine were hard wired and they have a backup battery. Of those dozen, 6 of them at various times randomly started reporting CO or smoke when none was present. Then, they eventually dropped support for them, so if they were unpaired, you could never add them back. Took 3-5 tries and about 15 minutes to pair each of the dozen in my home. Well, I'm not sure what other posts you're talking about, but definitely don't buy any First Alert Homekit smoke/co detectors. I’m guessing they sold way fewer of these devices than they had hoped. I know they had initially been planning a version that included WiFi mesh routing and it never materialized. It was clear to me that this product quickly became abandonware despite its promise. The app and HomeKit integration are also marginal. I didn’t feel like it was very stable and I ended up just putting HomePods everywhere despite having Safe & Sounds throughout the house. My initial excitement with airplay turned to disappointment. I have to say that 4 years without chasing down any dead battery beeps for the “dumb” smoke detectors with 9v batteries has been pretty nice, though. Maybe u/Dr_Nic_T61 will branch out from HomePods to Safe & Sound battery replacements □ I’m sure someone will come up with a DIY repair though. To be fair, i think we all knew with a sealed in battery they would die at some point and the whole unit would need replacing. Not looking forward to that day as there aren’t great alternatives (that I’m aware of). ![]() I have several of these, and they haven’t hit their expiration yet. ![]() News Review Discussion How-to Question/Help Other Apple Subreddits: News Review Discussion How-to Question/Help Don't show: 'What to buy' and 'Should I buy.' questions go in the the sticked megathread dedicated to these types of questions in order to keep the feed from being spammed with them.
